Lifelong Friends, Sorority Girls, Assignment #6 Cont.

So my CA from last year in the dorms asked me to take pictures of her and her friends who are all in the same sorority and graduating this semester.  I took them to Pertle Springs like I did the other day with Cayla.  I think they liked the spot.  However, I feel like I have ticks crawling all over me!! Ewww.  But hey, it was worth it…

The second girl I shot was Cayla.  We had a pretty good time adventuring through Pertle Springs.  Again I really had a lot of fun doing this and plan on doing this more often.

Bridget Assignment #6

I decided to shoot people for this final assignment.  After doing so I wish I would have just done this all semester.  I enjoyed this the most, I think I got the best photos and I had the most fun.  This is the shoot that I did with Bridget…

Business Card

Alrighty, so I figured I need some business cards to pass out to people.  So I have designed my first attempt at a business card.  I had to do it in a certain program in order to order them soon so this one is just one I threw together in photoshop so it’s not perfect or anything.  And I don’t have the back on there coz honestly, I’ve been working on this for a while now and I’m a bit irritated and don’t care anymore but anyways… here it is, let me know what you think

Duane Michals

Duane Michals, born February 18, 1932 in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, is a poet, philosopher, and a photographer.  He became interested in photography when he was 14 and was taking watercolor classes at Carnegie Institute.  His first exhibition is a collection of photos he took during a trip to Russia, in 1958, of people he encountered.  He started out making a living in commercial photography, preferring to take pictures of the people in their environment rather than a studio.  Along with being a photographer Michals is a poet and includes short stories that he pair with his photos.  In 1968 Michals was hired to photograph the Olympic Games.  Michals has shot everything from Life Covers and Vogue Magazines.  He also shot the cover for the album, Synchronicity, by the Police. 

I found Duane Michal’s work to be interesting but nothing that really caught my attention.  I do like how he puts short stories along with some of his images.  It makes it a bit more interesting with something to look for from the image.  One that I did see that I did really like was of a man and a woman on a bed and the woman is holding the man.  With the picture was a story about how the woman really loved the man and the image is the proof.

Sally Mann

Sally Mann, born May 1, 1951 in Lexington Virginia, began her career as a photographer as a staff photographer for Washington and Lee University.  Mann first became known from a one-woman exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington in 1977 displaying photo she took of the construction of a new law building.  Mann is well known for her collection At Twelve: Portraits of Young Women.  This collection illustrates the in-between, confusing phase which young women experience between female childhood and the adult world of women.  Following that collection she did a series called Immediate Family (1992) which some people thought of as child pornography because it consisted of nude images of her children.  However, the controversy of the over the images of her children brought along with it, much publicity which helped Mann become more famous.  Recently Mann has been taking photos using scratched lenses and damaged cameras, which require the photographer to use their hand as the shutter,  to creating creative light exposure and ghost like images.  In 2001 Mann was named “Photographer of the Year” by Time magazine.   Sally Mann prefers to do all of her work on her own and has no fondness for digital technology.  She usually uses an 8×10 large format camera and enjoys experimenting with early developing processes.   

In my opinion, Sally Mann’s images are absolutely beautiful.  I simply love the emotion portrayed in each image.  Each one has their own feeling to it.  The way the she captures the sentiment of the children in her Portraits of Young Women is gorgeous.  I really also like how some of her images have a mystical and surreal feeling to them.  While I was looking through some of her work there is one specific image which constantly caught my eye (it is posted below).  It is a side shot of a young woman with long hair, naked, holding a weed (? Could be something else?)  to her lips.  I don’t know what it is about this photo but I just think it is gorgeous.  It might just be me but it seems to have a mystical feel to it that shows the inner beauty of women.

Annie Leibovitz

Annie Leibovitz was born in 1949 in Waterbury, Connecticut, one of six children.  She attended the San Francisco Art Institute and began by studying painting.  She later became interested in photography after taking a trip with her mother to Japan.  Her career as a photographer began when she was assigned to shoot John Lennon for the Rolling Stones magazine which was published on the cover in January 21, 1971.  Two years later she was named the chief photographer of the Rolling Stones magazine.  In 2005 Leibovitz’s photograph of nude John Lennon curled around fully clothed Yoko Ono, taken in 1981 hours before Lennon was shot dead, was named the best magazine cover from the past 40 years by the American Society of Magazine Editors.  In 1983 joined Vanity Fair as a photographer.  The cover she shot for Vanity Fair of Demi Moore naked and hold her pregnant belly, was named the second best cover in the past 40 years.     Last year Leibovitz was asked by Queen Elizabeth II to take her official photo for her state visit to Virginia.  Also last year she was hired by Walt Disney to shoot a Walt Disney World’s Year of A Million Dreams campaign where she shot celebrities in various classic Disney movie scenes.  Leibovitz had a close relationship with writer Susan Sontag beginning in 1989 up until Susan’s death in 2004.  It is unknown for sure as to whether their relationship was a friendship, familial, or romantic.  Leibovitz also has three children:  Sarah, who was born when Leibovitz was 51, and twins, Susan and Samuelle, born from a surrogate mother in 2005 and named in memory of Susan Sontag and Leibovitz’s father.

 I personally am a fan of Annie Leibovitz’s work.  Everything she shoots is so powerful.  She has these visions of how she wants something to look and some sort of emotion she wants to portray.  Rather than simply shooting glamour shots of celebrities with big smiles, expensive clothes, and their hair flowing perfectly all around them,  she digs deep to bring out the person behind the pretty face.  Now I’m not saying that she shoots them in a way that makes them look unattractive but rather in a way that makes them seem more human, more real.  I am inspired by her ability to bring out emotion and all the symbolism that exists in her photos.  Plus its a sign… Annie Leibovitz is a great photographer and my name is Annie so it’s meant to be
